Join. Tutor. Serve.

City Tutors is a community organization with a goal to provide meaningful opportunities for college students to build professional skills, position for their career next steps, and share their knowledge while helping to enhance and expand academic support to students in underserved programs around NYC.

At City Tutors, we have opportunities for professionals to give back to their community and for retired professionals to meaningfully reengage with their community.

 ABOUT US

CT is the CCNY Colin Powell School’s volunteer tutoring program, and a community organization that provides volunteer tutoring support to programs across Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. We work with after school enrichment programs, housing projects, high schools, adult education programs, and a nano-tech lab. We work with students between 5-60 years old.

No formal tutoring experience necessary. We provide flexible training (days, evenings, weekends; in-person and virtual).

As a City Tutor, you can be connected to a mentor from an industry you are interested in who can help you with the job search, with drafting professional documents, and preparing for your next career steps.

WHAT MOTIVATES OUR WORK?

First generation and immigrant students attend college, they study hard and get the best grades they can while juggling a survival job or two. When they graduate, they are asked to demonstrate the experiences that make them a strong fit for the job. Though they might have a lot of transferable skills from part time jobs and family responsibilities, they are competing against candidates who have experiences (ie. internships and projects) that carry more currency with the employer.  For these students blocking off a chunk of time to do an internship (especially an unpaid one) might not be realistic. With this in mind, City Tutors provides flexible days/hours to build transferable and technical skills that are at the cross section of a students' academic interests and the field of education. Through embedded, virtual and study group tutoring opportunities that CT provides, students can engage with the academic skills that are the foundation for the work they want to do in the job market while also helping students in underserved programs get access to support in and out of the classroom.  Tutors are trained in effective tutoring practices, get to choose a location where they would like to work, and receive guidance and assistance from a tutor trainer throughout the semester.  Concurrently, tutors gain access to a mentor from an industry in a field they are interested in and/or an HR or job coach who works with them to position for their next career steps.

HOW DO WE PROVIDE OUR TUTORS A GREAT EXPERIENCE?

  • We empower students and professionals who want to give back through tutoring by providing support and opportunities for them to make an impact on the quality of the learning experience for students at under-served educational community programs across NYC.
  • We bridge the communication gap between academic support and instructional spaces to create learning environments that are more responsive to students' needs, and meaningful for tutors.
  • We invest in tutor training,  and tutors' professional development to ensure a professionalized volunteer service that can provide reliable, high quality tutoring support.
